“Watching movies is a waste of time!”
This is a phrase that some people use with me whenever I tell them that I am going to the cinema. Especially if they know that I will watch an animated movie, they will say those movies are for little kids. I, however, have a different perception because I believe any type of movie teaches us something new. So, today I am going to show you three life lessons we can learn from one of my favorite movies, “Finding Dory”, as an adult.
“Finding Dory” is a Disney animated movie that talks about Dory, a regal blue tang fish, who suffers from a short-term memory loss every 10 seconds or so. She lost her parents at a young age. When she grew up her memory sort of came back. So, she started the journey to find her parents without any hesitation. From a kid’s lens, the nearly two-hour movie may seem cute and all. But from an adult’s lens, the movie actually teaches us a few lessons.
- Life is an adventure
Dory promptly decides that she needs to find her long-lost parents regardless of any obstacles ahead. Her journey of crossing the ocean to California, the place her parents live, is not easy but without any contemplation or second thought, she gives it a go. As expected, along the way to California, she faces many problems but this journey also brings her memory back in bits and pieces, especially when she needs it the most.
From this angle of the movie, you see that you should not restrict yourself to live in the same old cycle every single day. In contrast, you should get out of that cycle and experience something new, something different because you will never know what you are capable of and what opportunity is lying ahead, if you only live your life in a small bubble.
2. Your weakness does not define you
As mentioned, Dory’s weakness is the fact that she suffers from a short-term memory loss which makes her forget what other sea creatures have just told her and what has just come out of her mouth. Knowing pretty well about her own weakness, Dory still did not allow that to stop her from pursuing her goal of reuniting with her family.
This is a very important message for the audience, especially grown-ups like you. Some of you may have given up a certain thing or opportunity because you believe your weakness will stop you from succeeding. Stop that train of thought and start embracing those weaknesses of yours because nobody is perfect and your imperfection is what makes you perfect.
3. Do not ever give up
“Just keep swimming” is Dory’s famous motto that everyone can learn from because no matter how hopeless or difficult the situation is, you should just keep on moving forward and stay positive, rather than dwell on the past or blame yourself for falling into such situations.
To be honest, whenever I feel stuck or hopeless, the motto, “Just keep swimming”, always lifts me up and gives me motivation to be persistent and keep moving ahead despite many problems I am facing before I can reach my goal. So, I hope that this motto would have the same effect on you! Keep moving forward with your head held high!
